CAO 2 - WELCOMING AN AMBASSADOR
• SHEET 4 •

SUPPORTING THE AMBASSADOR IN EVERYDAY LIFE

“

Supporting someone does not mean walking their path for them. It means giving them the confidence to walk it serenely themselves.

”

STARTING QUESTION

How can we support an ambassador throughout their stay so that they grow in independence, confidence and responsibility?

WHY THIS SHEET?

After the first days comes the time of everyday life. Routines become established.

The first difficulties sometimes appear. So do the first successes.

It is during this period that the ambassador gradually builds their independence and reveals the best of themselves.

The host family's role is not to live this experience in the ambassador's place.

It is to create the conditions that will allow them to live their own experience to the full.

THE FIVE KEYS TO SUCCESSFUL SUPPORT

1
Being present without being overbearing

The ambassador should always feel they can count on you.

But they also need the space to learn, decide, experiment and grow.

Supporting someone means finding the right balance between presence and freedom.

2
Helping confidence grow

Confidence cannot be decreed. It is built day by day.

  • Encourage.
  • Acknowledge progress.
  • Gradually hand over new responsibilities.

Every sign of trust helps the ambassador grow.

3
Turning difficulties into learning opportunities

Homesickness. A misunderstanding. A poor performance. A conflict.

All of these situations are a natural part of the adventure. The point is not to avoid them.

The point is to go through them together, so that they become opportunities to grow.

4
Encouraging their independence

Gradually, the ambassador should become the author of their own stay.

  • Allow room for initiative.
  • Encourage decision-making.
  • Gradually build a sense of responsibility.

Independence is one of the finest gifts a host family can offer.

5
Growing together

An OSE exchange always transforms those who experience it. The ambassador discovers a new culture. The family discovers another way of seeing the world.

The club, friends, educators and sometimes both families grow too. Everyone learns from one another.

The exchange then becomes a truly human adventure.

TRUST HELPS PEOPLE GROW

The more a person feels trusted, the more they dare to take initiative. The more initiative they take, the more they progress.

Trust is not the reward for independence. It is often its starting point.

To trust someone is already to begin helping them grow.

MISTAKES TO AVOID

  • Wanting to control everything.
  • Doing things for them.
  • Overprotecting them.
  • Leaving them alone to face their difficulties.
  • Immediately solving all their problems.
  • Confusing support with control.

GOOD PRACTICES

  • Being available for regular conversation.
  • Encouraging rather than judging.
  • Acknowledging progress, however modest.
  • Gradually giving more independence.
  • Helping the ambassador reflect on their experiences.
  • Maintaining an atmosphere of trust, respect and kindness.

A sheet is not meant to be read. It is meant to be lived. Take the time to talk it over before deciding.
