THE OSE ADVENTURE BOOKLETS Booklet No. 3  •  Sending an Ambassador
SHEET 1

WHEN A COMMUNITY CHOOSES TO PLACE ITS TRUST

“

An ambassador never sets out alone. They are carried forward by the trust of an entire community.

”
OSE community gathered around the ambassador before departure - a collective adventure, a shared trust

Why this sheet?

A departure is never decided in haste.

Sending an OSE ambassador is not simply a matter of allowing a young person to spend several months abroad. It means entrusting them with a mission, accepting that they will grow away from their familiar surroundings, and mobilising an entire community around their project.

This decision engages the young person, their family, their club, the sending OSE Country and the host OSE Country.

Above all, it rests on mutual trust.

Before saying "yes", everyone must be able to answer one essential question: Are we truly ready to live this adventure together?

The 5 keys

1
CHECKING THAT THE YOUNG PERSON IS READY

An OSE ambassador cannot be reduced to their sporting level. They must have grasped the meaning of their mission and be willing to represent their club, their country and OSE's values throughout their stay. They set out to progress, discover, share and grow.

2
CHECKING THAT THE FAMILY IS READY

The family must understand that this adventure is a significant step in their child's personal development. They agree to place their trust in them while remaining present whenever this may be needed.

3
CHECKING THAT THE CLUB IS READY

The club is not simply losing a member for a while. It is entrusting one of its own to an international community. Throughout the stay, the ambassador continues to represent their club.

4
CHECKING THAT THE HOST COUNTRY IS READY

A departure exists only because a place to arrive already exists. Before any decision is made, the sending OSE Country ensures that the partner country is able to offer the young person the best possible conditions for success. The way this welcome is built is set out in Adventure Booklet No. 2: Welcoming an Ambassador.

5
DECIDING TOGETHER

Once everyone is ready, the decision becomes a collective one. No single person bears sole responsibility for it. Everyone commits to supporting the ambassador until their return.

MISTAKES TO AVOID

  • Deciding on a departure based solely on sporting level.
  • Believing that a young person sets out alone.
  • Underestimating the importance of preparing the family.
  • Confusing enthusiasm with preparation.
  • Deciding on a departure without ensuring that the arrangements for welcome are genuinely ready.
  • Trying to plan for everything instead of building a relationship of trust.

GOOD PRACTICES

  • Involving the young person, their family and their club in the discussion at an early stage.
  • Clearly explaining the mission entrusted to an OSE ambassador.
  • Checking that everyone understands their responsibilities.
  • Confirming that the partner country is ready to welcome the young person.
  • Reaching a joint decision, one that is explained and owned by all.

The checklist

Before confirming departure, can we answer YES to the following statements?
The young person understands their mission as an ambassador.
Their family fully supports the project.
The club officially supports their departure.
The host country is ready to receive them.
Both OSE Countries have approved the project.
Everyone now knows their role.
